Door Refresh Project Approaching

I’ll be replacing all rubber, gaskets, seals, etc. Yesterday I received the crank handles, buffers and springs that I ordered from I’ve been pretty pleased with everything that I’ve ordered from Jbugs in the past, but a bit disappointed with the window crank handles. Quality on both are good, but they’re from 2 different manufacturers and the texture on black plastic cover is different on each. Not a big deal, but still, they should’ve sent handles from the same manufacturer so they’d match. Not going to make a big deal out of it. I know I’ll be removing the mushroom rivet from the vent window to install the new rubber, I’ve ordered 2 replacement rivets from Jbugs, but in the mean time, I ordered a snap fastener kit from General that somebody on had recommended. Part #1265. It would appear that these parts have changed since the forum user posted his findings. The rivets now included in this kit are about the right size, but the heads are way to big. I knew that I didn’t want to use a regular pop rivet to reinstall the vent window, so I’d also come across another kit on Amazon called Snap Kit Tool Set. It was cheap and appeared to contain a bunch of rivets about the same size as the one in the vent window. It also includes the tools to compress and mushroom the rivets. Even though I ordered 2 OG rivets from Jbugs, I thought this may be a good kit to test with, like I said, it was cheap. One set of rivets that came with the kit are the exact right size for the vent window, so I should have many chances to get it right. Only thing I’m waiting for are the lock rod knobs and the seals for those. They should be here by the end of the week. That will be everything I’ve gathered over the past month and a half and need to complete the project, that and some good, warm weather. I’m also considering replacing the driver side door mirror while I have the door striped down. It’ll be easier to get to and since I installed a nice shiny one on the passenger side last year, it’d be nice for them to match. Stay tuned for more details.

UPDATE (02/10/2017): I shot an email to concerning the mismatched window crank handles. I didn’t ask for anything, just letting them know that when people order these parts, they may want to pay closer attention so they don’t send mismatched parts. As a result, they’re sending me a replacement to match one of the crank handles (the one closest to the buffers in the pic above)…that’s how you keep customers. I will send the mismatched window crank handle back to them.

Last Order For Door/Window Refresh

I placed the last order for everything I should need to start on the window and door rebuild kit. All new rubber, scrapers, handles, crank, etc. I’ve watched a ton of howto videos and I’m confident it’s not going to be has hard as I initially thought. I believe the new release latches for the vent windows is going to be the hardest part. Today I ordered new window crank handles, the plastic buffers and the tension springs. I also ordered a snap, grommet and rivet tool kit that includes tubular rivets for the vent window swivel point. Most people use a regular pop rivet, but I don’t think it looks as finished or nice. So, once this order arrives and we start having some consistent warm days, the project will begin. I plan on creating my own howto for this project with lots of pictures and video. Stay tuned!

Wing Window Release Latches

Wing Window Release KnobsGot my wing window release latches from in the mail today. I now have everything I need to change all the rubber, scrapers, etc. on both doors. Even though we’re having a semi mild winter, I still think I’m going to wait until early spring to take on this project, I know it’s not going to be easy. Regardless, I’m excited to get it done and to make Mabels doors look awesome again!

New Window and Door Kit

Window & Door KitWindow & Door KitMy awesome wife surprised me with new German window and door kits for Mabel. All other rubber and seals on the car have already been replaced, the last piece of the puzzle was new seals and window treatment for the doors. I’ve been putting it off for some time because the German kits are expensive and replacing them is not an easy project and time consuming. Great kit from JBugs, complete with instructional video on dvd. Probably won’t start on this project until spring and it’s probably going to be a whole weekend kind of project, but can’t wait to freshen up Mabels doors!

Ready For Christmas and Maybe a Change

15350698_10210822653337431_7850022642222570218_nGetting some decorations up for Christmas, took Mabel out for a drive around town. Something I’m considering is putting her back to stock. She’s 100% stock other than the narrowed front beam and gas burner rims. Inside, nothing has changed since 1967. So, here’s my question. The front beam is new, 3 inch narrow beam built by Rusty Bottom Garage with new tierods and German ball joints with CB drop disc spindles. What I’m considering doing is putting the stock front beam back on (1968). How much of a pain in the ass is this going to be?

Mabel Is Happy

Road Trip and BathOil Change KitOil UsedToday was a good day to get Mabel out and take her for a spin around town. She got a fresh oil change, strainer change and gasket change. This is the best she’s ran since I bought her. It’s amazing what a good distro, carb and valve tune up can do for these Beetles. She’s happy and resting comfortably, looking forward to getting her out for a spin tomorrow.

Mabel Lives Again

Carb KitMabel LivesSo the carb kit that I ordered from Carb Junky arrived in the mail today. After work, I decided to throw in the float, new gasket and give her a try. As always, she fired right up and the anticipation mounted as I waited for the choke to release. Once it released, to continued to idle like her old self. I let her run for about 15 minutes, throttle was responsive and no more rich smelling exhaust. I still need to adjust the mix as she’s idling a little high, but I also need to get the oil changed again since so much fuel had seeped into the case. I’ll get around to that on Friday evening. So for now, she starts right up, cold or hot and idles like her old self. Thanks to everybody who chimed in with advice, especially the folks at

May Have Found The Culprit

Carburetor ProblemsCarburetor ProblemsCarburetor ProblemsCarburetor ProblemsMay have found the carb issue with Mabel. I took the carb apart last night to clean the jets and tested the float. However, I tested the float in water which is heavier than gas, so it floated fine in water, but as you can see from the pics above, it doesn’t float in gas. These floats are notorious for absorbing gas over time and becoming too heavy to float. In the video below, you can see how rough it’s running and gas coming through the bypass. It’s not being cut off, therefore flooding the carb. Hopefully a new float will solve the problem.
